Cricket format

Mainly there are 3 types of cricket format and they are : Test cricket , One day international (ODI)cricket and twenty20 (T20) cricket . Each format of cricket their own fans , unique experience for player , there are different rules , different duration , different strategies . understanding the 3 types of cricket format helps to cricket fans to enjoying the games .

Test Cricket:

Among the 3 types of cricket format, Test cricket is the oldest and most traditional format of the game . A test match can plays up to 5 days . test cricket has 4 inning (2 inning for each team) . In test cricket ,minimum 90 over played in 6 hours a day . Test cricket is the ultimate test of cricket skills , temperament , endurance and ability . Test cricket currently played by the 12 team which are the full member of ICC

The first officially test match was played between Australia vs England at Melbourne cricket ground in 15-19 march 1877 and that match Australia won by 45 run and that game is called beginning of test cricket

Traditionally test cricket was played with red ball however the tv viewership goes down in 2000s , ICC introduced a day night test match . In 2012 ICC officially approved a day night test match format and first day night test match way played between Australia vs New Zealand in 27-29 November 2015 at Adelaide oval ground Australia . Day night test cricket match played with pink ball because it makes easier for players to see under floodlights. That match Australia won by 3 wicket and make a history

One Day International (ODI):

Among the 3 types of cricket format another is One Day International cricket (ODI) . ODI is a limited-overs cricket format . In this format each team is allowed to bat for a maximum of 50 overs and also 50 over for bowling . ODI matches are usually completed in a single day and provide a balance between strategy and entertainment . In ODI cricket white ball is used to play .

The first one day international (ODI) cricket was played on 5 January 1971 between Australia vs England at Melbourne cricket ground and that match Australia won by 5 wicket .

In ODI cricket , one bowler can bowl maximum 10 over .

In an ODI cricket two captain goes for a toss . Wining captain choose whether bat or bowl then first . Batting first team set a target and bat last until they got all out or all 50 over .Then second batting team tries to chase that run , if they score more than targeted run within 50 over then they win otherwise they lose .

Field restriction in ODI cricket

  • In first 10 over in an inning , the fielding team allowed only two player outside the 30-yard circle
  • Between 11-40 over only 4 fielder allowed outside the 30-yard circle
  • In the final 10 over 5 fielder allowed outside the 30-yard circle

Twenty20(T20) cricket

Among the 3 types of cricket format , T20 is the shortest and fastest cricket format . In a Twenty20 game, the two teams have a single inning each, which is maximum of twenty overs . A T20 match finished within 3 hours .In T20 cricket , one bowler can bowl maximum 4 over . T20 cricket played with white ball . A few year back T20 cricket was introduction by ICC . The first official men’s T20 international match was played between Australia vs New Zealand in 17 February 2005 at Eden park New Zealand and that match Australia won by 44 run .

  • Short duration
  • More entertainment
  • Easy to follow and watch
  • Easy to attract more fans
  • More popular league

Field restriction in T20 cricket

  • In first 6 over in an inning , the fielding team allowed only two player outside the 30-yard circle .
  • Between 7-20 over only 5 fielder allowed outside the 30-yard circle .
